The planet is warming: 15 of the 16 warmest years on record have occurred during 21st century. The arctic ice sheets are melting, sea levels are rising and weather patterns are changing. the urgency of the situation motivated the Paris Accords of 2015, a historic agreement between 195 countries to limit GHGE. Biodiversity Loss is also increasing at alarming rate. Biodiversity is beneficial in a sense to boost productivity, resilience and sustainability of ecosystem which benefits humans such as retention of soil, regulation of climate etc. Unfortunately, despite of many efforts, there exists biodiversity loss due to which loss of soil quality, climate change, reduction in capacity of productive land etc.

THE IMPORTANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DIET AND ENVIRONMENT FOR FUTURE NEEDS

Introduction and Guidance to Sustainable Diet:

It is the position of the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior that environmental sustainability should be inherent in dietary guidance, whether working with individual or groups about their dietary choices or in setting dietary guidance. Improving nutritional health of population is a long- term goal that requires to ensure a good management in food system. Some of the major issues are creating hurdles in the sustainability of environment that are land degradation, biodiversity loss, climate change, water shortages, and water pollution. These are mainly causing problems in food security. Now, come to the main pint that why are we discussing the sustainability for dietary guidance? The answer can be given by keeping in mind the present situation of our population and the population in future. Just have a look towards your diet. Do you think that you have sustainable diet? This sustainable diet in a report of Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) actually means ” a pattern of eating that promotes health and well-being and provides food security for present population while sustaining human and natural resources for future generations.”Based on evidence, the DGAC asserted that a diet higher in plant-based foods and lower in animal-based foods is healthier and associated with a lower impact on environment. This is also considered that we should not skip any food for all food groups.

The diet should be in this manner that you have in your mind to get energy and not to full your stomach.

Current Environmental Problems:

Global Climatic Changes is one of the most urgent problems that exists today. According to the recent report of United Nations indicated that despite of growing number of attempts to deal with this problem, growth of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHGE) has accelerated over past decades. This problem is causing shifts in food production areas, also acidifying oceans are causing low fishery yields. Changes in Water Resources are also a concern in terms of both quality and quantity. A global analysis of fresh water systems that provide water for humans and important for ecosystem functioning found that 80% of world’s population is living where water security for humans is highly threatening.

Meeting Our Future Food Needs:

Currently an estimated 795 million people in the world lack adequate energy from food and over 2 billion people experience micronutrient malnutrition. At the same time, nearly 2 billion people in the world are overweight and obese. The prevalence of over-nutrition is a global phenomenon which has resulted in increasing household incomes and westernization of the diet in middle and low-income countries like our Pakistan. It is an estimate by United Nations that by 2050, the population will be 9.7 billion. By keeping in mind the current assumption rate of food, indicates that our future generations will face difficulties in having balanced and sustainable diets. They will surely face deficiencies of nutrients. This has a major impact on the economy and success of that country. Unfortunately, in Pakistan every second child is stunted in his growth. That’s why, our country is far beyond from the new emerging technologies and from economic development. Just because to avoid this type of situation, super powers are working hard to control their population and current environmental issues due to pollution as I have discussed earlier.
