Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a hair transplant technique in which follicular units are directly removed from the donor area and transplant on bald areas of the head or the areas where the patient desires more hair. Oil glands, a small muscle, nerves, and some vellus hair are the small units of FU.
In Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), the surgeon can transplant a large number of grafts per session with these small units, which results in the cosmetic impact of the procedure. FUT produced undetectable, well grow natural hair.
Strip harvesting is also a method of hair transplant. The personal follicular units are extracted from the hair restoration patients’ donors are ideally one at a time in FUE harvesting. The term Follicular Unit (FU) extraction was first described in 1988 in Japan by Masumi Inala. He introduced a 1 mm needle’s use for extracting FU. Dr. Ray wood was the first person who successfully conducts it publically. In FUE, the body hair can be transplanted on the scalp which was effectively used by Ray wood in 1988.
Nowadays, the tool used for FU treatment is complex that a few surgeons and practitioners used them. This procedure takes time and its study is also expensive; this is the main reason that very few surgeons choose this field for their practice. FUE is comparatively comfortable and less irritable after surgery and the recovery ratio is also higher than FUT.

The extraction of FU is dependent upon the rule that arrector the muscle of the area of attachment to the follicular unit should be tight. If it became loose and separated from the located or surroundings areas the smallest segment can be extracted easily. If we want the scar too small to be recognized, the needle for micro punches should be the use of size 0.6-0.8 mm. In this technique, one can find flaws as well. In this method, it’s not possible to identify the bulge of hair from outside so the procedure is not clear. As each unit has to be pulled out slowly, this method also takes time a lot. But, one the surgeon gets experienced and his/her hand-eye coordination is good, the transaction can be improved.
It is worth noting that the tightness with which the FU is the field in dermis varies, so it is not suitable for the entire patient. That’s why the surgeon should confirm suitable first whether the patient is conciliated for FUE or not. The surgeon takes out a few grafts from the donor area in FOX text and evaluates how many FU are complete or incomplete for extraction. If the units are complete and easy to be extracted, then the surgeon allows FUE; otherwise the strip technique is suitable for the patient.
FUE is a type of hair transplant in which the extracting method is different but implantation is the same as FUT. In this method, hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head under local anesthesia, with the help of special micro punches and implanted in the area where the hair is desired.
The donor area first trimmed to 1-2 mm length. Then with the help of 0.8 and 1 mm special micro punch, the grafts are extracted under local anesthesia with Xylocaine, 1% diluted with saline, which a administered slowly over the entire donor area.
FUE is an advanced technique of hair transplant, which is scar less surgery for both the patient and surgeon. People choose this method over strip harvesting because it is rather less pain full and sometimes pain-free after surgery. The hair gain from FUE looks natural and as desirable as the patient wants if the surgery time is improved the greater number of patient adopt it. Hence more research is needed to fast the procedure.
